KATIE WARD

I am a contemporary figurative artist. I primarily work in oils but I also incorporate a mixture of mediums such as graphite, charcoal, ash and gold leaf, and utilize both abstract and representational imagery in my pieces. In my pieces I wrestle with philosophical and theological themes. I am heavily influenced by different genres of Medieval artwork from icons to architecture as well as certain Modern artists and I have drawn many artistic similarities between the two eras.

Along with being an artist, I am a wife of fifteen years and a mother to three little girls and one little boy. Amidst all the chaos of raising a young family, I find time to retreat to my studio where I am able to explore those philosophical and theological concepts that pique my interest or boggle my mind. I document this whole process of questioning and discovering in my artwork.

I am currently wrapping up a multi-year series focused on the dichotomies that we humans live in; such things as brokenness cultivating strength and suffering transforming into beauty. This series is titled The Quotidian Mysteries. I am also embarking on two new series. One is a commission for the Stations of the Cross, the other, a contemplation on the concepts of the word reflection.
